Pediatrics & Pregnancy

Many people don’t see or understand the relationship between chiropractic care and pregnancy. Yet, having an optimal functioning nervous system and the best structural support is very important for both mother and child. Chiropractic care prior to conception, has helped many women regulate proper menstrual cycle and uterine function. With chiropractic care the body is in better balance, has optimal structural alignment of the spine and pelvis, decreased chance of uterine constraint and ultimately, allows for the most efficient function of the nervous system. This is extremely important because the nervous system is the master control system of the body, it regulates and controls all other life systems within us, including the reproductive system.  There have been numerous couples who thought they were infertile or suffered with infertility problems that have been helped by restoring proper nerve supply to reproductive organs through specific, natural chiropractic care.

During pregnancy, a women goes through many hormonal changes, often causing the ligaments to become lax (loose) which causes pelvic bones and spinal bones to shift out of alignment easier and creates muscle imbalances. Regular chiropractic care during pregnancy maintains the body in balance, proper alignment and supports optimal function of the nerves.  Many women state that while under chiropractic care they experience less morning sickness, move better or have better flexibility and less low back and pelvic pain during their pregnancy. Pregnant women under care of a chiropractor are less likely of having a breeched presentation during the last trimester. In some cases during a pregnancy a child may be found to be in a breeched position in the womb, they are laying upside down or sideways instead of head down just weeks or days before the projected due date. Often, if this child’s position does not change prior to labor, a forced C-section is done. If a breech occurs and mom is not seeing a chiropractor she must look for one who is certified in the Webster Technique or has experience with this specific presentation . The Doctor will perform an exam on mom and give specific adjustments as necessary, restoring alignment, helping decrease uterine constraint and ultimately allowing the child to turn on its own to a natural birthing position (head down).  When pelvic alignment is properly restored, it decreases any uterine constraint creating the most comfortable position for the child thus the optimal environment for the birthing process. Mothers who are adjusted by a chiropractor have reported shorter, less traumatic births. This makes for an “easier” birthing process because mom has the best muscle balance, spinal alignment and nerve supply possible, allowing naturally smooth movement by the child through the birth canal.

Why would my new-born, infant, toddler or child need chiropractic adjustments, you ask?  As was mentioned above, a pregnant mom who gets adjusted creates the best internal environment not just for herself but for her child. Once the child is born, it is equally important to create an optimal environment for the child outside of the womb. How is this environment created? By checking the new-born for any vertebral subluxations (bony misalignment interfering with nerve signals) that may occur from the birth process itself. This is especially critical if the labor was very long and intense, a vacuum extraction was done, lots of pulling or twisting of the baby’s neck , or any difficulty was experienced in getting the child through and out of the birth canal. If these subluxations exist, they may cause dysfunction of the baby’s nervous system leading to future health problems. If these exist, chiropractic adjustments are warranted. Often infants only have 1 or 2 subluxations, but the entire spine and pelvis should always be checked. It is often unexplained why a new-born or infant has trouble sleeping, experiences colic, excessively cries, won’t eat well, gets ear infections, has allergies, respiratory problems, seizures, or exhibits other signs of poor health. Your child may have vertebral subluxations and you as an innocent parent are not aware and neither is your pediatrician or medical doctor because they are not trained to look for or correct these spinal problems. Many parents see instant improvements in their child’s health and well-being with chiropractic.  Get your child checked by a family chiropractor.

Regular chiropractic check-ups are great to make sure normal spinal development is occurring and the child is growing healthy and strong. As an infant begins to sit upright, then crawl and later take its first steps, it is important to make sure their movement is smooth and uninterrupted. Being in proper alignment and having a healthy nervous system provides the child with the best chance to grow and develop optimally. Children have “weaker” immune systems because this system has not fully developed at a young age but it is NOT normal for your child to experience colds, ear infections or get sick easily or often. This is a sign of an irregularly weak immune system and one way to boost this systems efficiency is to remove any interference to the nervous system which science proves is very closely tied to immune function. Children between the ages of 1-5 often experience more slips, falls and accidents than they will the rest of their life combined. These repeated physical traumas are one of the most common causes of spinal problems like vertebral subluxations. Many experts believe that uncorrected spinal problems over the years, especially during early development and growth causes the chronic, difficult to correct subluxations seen in adults. Regular chiropractic check-ups for infants, toddlers, children and young adults are key for proper development, growth, maintenance of health and prevention of disease.

PLEASE NOTE: Specific, gentle chiropractic adjustments given to pregnant moms must only be done by a trained Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). Many chiropractors care for pregnant women and children but few have additional training and expertise with this specific population. Look for a family chiropractor who works with pregnant moms and young kids regularly and who has advanced training. Chiropractic adjustments given to pregnant women, infants and young children are extremely safe and gentle, and are NOT the same as those given to adults. They are specifically modified and often other techniques are used for the care of these populations.
